How to view App Store apps from other countries: three methods and what to avoid

Browsing, downloading and changing regions are different jobs. From the Daju Toolbox storefront link to the web store, public APIs and Apple Account region changes — plus the limits of each, and an appendix with all 130 storefront links.

How-toApp Store

The same app can have a different release status, version, price, rating and even screenshots in each country's App Store. When you check iPhone Duo compatibility, the first question is often not “does this app work?” but “which storefront am I actually looking at?”

Below are three ways to look, ordered from lightest to heaviest: a storefront redirect link, the web App Store, and actually switching Apple Accounts. There is a FAQ and a one-minute decision table at the end.

1. Separate three things first

A lot of confusion comes from mixing these up:

  • Interface language is not the store region. Changing your phone to English does not move the App Store to the US. The storefront follows the country or region on your Apple Account.
  • Seeing an app is not the same as being able to download it. Redirect links and the web store let you browse another storefront, but downloads, purchases and subscriptions still depend on the Apple Account you are signed in with.
  • Switching the App Store account is not the same as switching the iCloud account. The former affects media and purchases; the latter affects photos, backups, Find My and other system services. They can be separate.

Decide which one you need: just a look at the page, or an actual download. For most compatibility checks, looking is enough.

2. Method 1: a storefront redirect link (fastest)

This is the lowest-effort way to peek at another country's App Store. The Daju Toolbox WeChat mini program (大橘工具箱) includes an App Store Region Switch tool that generates and copies the right storefront link for you.

Steps

  1. Search for and open “大橘工具箱” in WeChat;
  2. Go to Device tools;
  3. Open App Store Region Switch;
  4. Search for a country or region by Chinese name, English name or two-letter code, for example Japan, US or JP;
  5. Tap a common country or any region in the full list — the link is copied automatically;
  6. Open the App Store or Safari, paste the link and go.

The tool includes 130 countries and regions. China, the US, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the UK, Hong Kong and Taiwan are listed first as common choices. The full list of 130 links is in the appendix at the end.

What the link looks like

For the US, the copied link is:

itms-apps://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/resetAndRedirect?dsf=143441&cc=us

dsf is Apple's storefront ID and cc is the country or region code. The three common ones are:

Region Code Storefront ID
China CN 143465
United States US 143441
Japan JP 143462

The link only asks the App Store to open that storefront. It does not change the country or region of your Apple Account, and it never asks for your Apple ID password. If an app still shows as unavailable after the link opens, that is usually an account or payment-method restriction, not a broken link.

When to use it

  • You want a quick look at an app's page, price, rating or version in the US or Japan store;
  • You want to confirm whether an app is listed in a particular storefront at all;
  • You do not want to touch your account settings just to look.

If you are not in WeChat, use the web store below instead.

3. Method 2: the web App Store (no sign-in)

The App Store website already uses region paths. Change the country segment in the URL to browse a different storefront:

  • China: https://apps.apple.com/cn/
  • United States: https://apps.apple.com/us/
  • Japan: https://apps.apple.com/jp/

The same works for individual app pages. If a Chinese app page starts with https://apps.apple.com/cn/app/..., replacing cn with us or jp usually opens the same app in that region. You can also browse charts directly:

  • US free chart: https://apps.apple.com/us/charts/iphone
  • Japan free chart: https://apps.apple.com/jp/charts/iphone

The web store is good for checking:

  • whether the app is listed in that region;
  • local pricing, in-app purchases and subscription details;
  • screenshots, version history and privacy labels;
  • the general state of ratings and reviews;
  • the supported-device list.

It requires no Apple Account sign-in, so it will not trigger a region change or affect the App Store on your phone. The downside is that some pages nudge you into the App Store app; the actual download still depends on your account.

Two official endpoints for developers

If you need to check storefront data in a more systematic way, Apple exposes public endpoints:

https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=284882215&country=us
https://itunes.apple.com/us/rss/topfreeapplications/limit=100/json

The first looks up metadata for a specific App ID in a given storefront; the second returns that region's free chart. Both are fine for light checks, not high-frequency scraping. Follow Apple's terms and cache responses.

Duo Tracker itself collects charts and verification records separately for China, the US and Japan. To compare compatibility across the three stores without switching anything, start from the app directory, the compatibility list or Top 100.

4. Method 3: actually switch the App Store account or region (can download, highest cost)

If you need to download an app that is only available in another region, the App Store must use an Apple Account from that region. There are two common approaches.

Option A: change the country or region of your current Apple Account

The path is roughly:

Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → View Account → Country/Region → Change Country or Region

This is not a one-tap switch. Apple generally requires you to:

  • spend your remaining store balance;
  • cancel subscriptions in the current region;
  • wait for pending purchases, rentals or refunds to clear;
  • provide a valid payment method and billing address for the new country or region.

After switching, some purchased content, subscriptions and Apple services may stop working, and Family Sharing can be affected. Read Apple's official guide on changing your Apple Account country or region before doing it.

If you only want to browse, this is not worth it. Changing regions has a much wider impact than viewing one app page.

Option B: use a separate regional Apple Account

A more common approach is to keep your existing iCloud account and sign in with a regional account only for Media & Purchases:

  1. Sign out of the account currently used for Media & Purchases;
  2. Sign in with an Apple Account registered in the target region;
  3. Keep iCloud on your original account so photos, backups and Find My are unaffected;
  4. Download the app from that region's store.

This usually requires a local payment method or gift card; even some free apps ask you to complete payment information first. It also has ongoing maintenance costs:

  • apps downloaded with an account usually need that same account for updates;
  • subscriptions, in-app purchases and refunds stay tied to the purchasing account;
  • frequent switching can trigger security checks;
  • never give your password to a third party or use a random “shared account”.

Apple now also allows migrating purchases to another Apple Account when the conditions are met, but region and account requirements still apply. It is not a casual region-switching tool.

5. Which region should you check for Duo compatibility?

Duo Tracker treats China, the US and Japan as three independent storefronts. An app may be adapted in China but still unchecked in Japan, and different store versions can produce different results.

A sensible order:

  1. Open the app directory and switch to the storefront you care about;
  2. Search for the app and read the status badge;
  3. Open the details and compare the store version with the tested version;
  4. If you plan to download from another region, rely on that region's record rather than the China result alone;
  5. To browse adapted apps first, open Top 100.

Remember: a compatibility result is tied to a version, not to a region label. If the regional build updates, the old result may need another check.

6. FAQ

The link still opens my local store. Why?
Check the region of the Apple Account currently signed in to the App Store, then try opening the link from inside the App Store. A storefront link cannot bypass account-level region restrictions.

The web page works, but the App Store cannot find the app.
The app is probably not listed in that storefront, or your account is attached to a different one. Trust the web listing for availability, then verify the account region.

I can see the price but cannot buy.
Payment method, billing address and account region must match. Without a local payment method, even a free app may fail on the first download.

Can I still update apps after changing regions?
Apps usually update with the account that downloaded them. Before switching, think about which apps you still need to update; deleting one can make it hard to download again.

Are storefront links safe?
The links in this article point to Apple's official itunes.apple.com domain, require no sign-in and do not modify your account. Avoid any “region switcher” that asks for your Apple ID password, verification code or two-factor code.

7. One-minute decision table

What you need Recommended method Account change
Just view a page, price or version in another region Storefront link or web store No
Compare Duo compatibility across China, the US and Japan Duo Tracker directory, compatibility list, Top 100 No
Download an app only listed in another region An Apple Account from that region Yes, at least for Media & Purchases
Use another region's services long term Change the Apple Account country or region Yes, widest impact

For most people checking compatibility, the first method is enough. Confirm the page and version with a link or the web store first, then decide whether a download is worth changing account settings for.

Appendix: storefront links for all 130 countries and regions

The table matches the data in the mini program's App Store Region Switch tool, sorted by English name. Tap a region name to open that storefront; to copy a raw link, build it with this pattern:

itms-apps://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/resetAndRedirect?dsf=<storefront ID>&cc=<two-letter code>

These links only open a storefront. They do not change your Apple Account country or region and require no sign-in.
